The Ochsner STAR program provides qualified high school students, particularly those with limited means and access, a cost-free opportunity to explore the world of healthcare. Through a rigorous, hands-on summer course focusing on science, technology, academics, and research, STAR aims to engage and inspire students to pursue further education and careers in science and medicine.

- Completed STAR 2013 Application
- Essay (300-350 words), typed or legibly hand-written
- Self-Evaluation
- Official school transcript in a signed and sealed envelope from your current school
- Recommendation letter #1, including 2-page recommendation form, submitted in a sealed envelope with the writer’s signature across the seal
- Recommendation letter #2, including 2-page recommendation form, submitted in a sealed envelope with the writer’s signature across the seal
Any submitted applications missing components will not be reviewed.
- Minimum requirements (age, Louisiana residency, grade level, complete application)
- Quality of answers in the application and essay
- Recommendation letters and evaluations
- Desire to pursue an education and eventual career in healthcare, research, science, or medicine
- Extracurricular activities
- Community involvement
- Proof of integrity, honesty and self-discipline
- Commitment to education, self-improvement, and teamwork
- Applications will only be accepted by mail or in person
- All applications must be received (not postmarked) by March 6th at 4:00pm
- Faxed and e-mailed applications will not be accepted or reviewed

The Academic Outreach Office is located at the back of the Tansey Breast Center across Jefferson Highway from Ochsner Medical Center's hospital and clinic. If you are approaching Ochsner Medical Center on Jefferson Highway from New Orleans, turn right at the traffic light immediately before Ochsner Children's Health Center, onto Collins C. Diboll Drive. If you are approaching from Metairie, turn left immediately after the Children's Health Center onto Collins C. Diboll Drive. The second building on your left will be the Lieselotte Tansey Breast Center. You may park in the portion of the parking lot between the building and Collins C. Diboll Drive. Academic Outreach is directly accessible at the back of the building, through a separate door facing Collins C. Diboll.
