 | | (July 26, 2011) The final week of STAR was a busy one for the students as they attended their last lectures and rotations and developed their research poster presentations. Students also shadowed a mentor in the field they are interested in pursuing. Along with these academic- and career-related activities, STAR students had the opportunity to "pay it forward" during the annual STAR Give Back Day when they cleaned bumpers on the hospital floors. The STAR culmination ceremony is Thursday, July 28, when the students will present their research posters and their reflections on the STAR program to a group of invited guests that includes executives of the Academic Division and program mentors.

 | | (December 13, 2010) When students from St. Matthew the Apostle were asked, “So, do you want to be in CSI one day?” they eagerly responded, “Yes!” “Maybe!” “No, I want to work here!” Twenty-three students from St. Matthew the Apostle Elementary School joined Academic Outreach for a morning of DNA experimentation in the iLab. Several of the students who attended were members of their school’s Science Olympiad Team, a driven group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who excel in the sciences.

All nine of the students participating in the exam passed. This year marks the second in a row that Ochsner has achieved a 100% pass rate with UQ students completing this clinical skills exam at the Ochsner Clinical School.

 | | (November 11, 2010) This week, the National Cancer Institute released initial results from the National Lung Screening Trial, a large-scale, long-term study comparing two screening methods’ ability to reduce deaths from lung cancer by detecting cancers at relatively early stages. The study included 33 clinical trials sites and more than 53,000 patients. One of those trial sites—where 508 patients were randomized and screened—was Ochsner.

 | | On Friday, May 21, Academic Outreach hosted a DNA forensics laboratory session entitled “Bubble Gum Robber,” in the iLab for students from Learning, Etc., an educational center dedicated to children on the West Bank. This marked Learning, Etc.’s first visit to the Ochsner’s iLab facility, and it was quite the learning experience for the 12 students. Students were aided in the experiment, directed by Dr. Jawed Alam, by 2 adults accompanying them and 2 Outreach staff members.  | | On Tuesday, May 18, at 6:00 p.m., Academic Outreach team welcomed the recently chosen Science-Technology-Academics-Research (STAR) students and their families to the Doctors Dining Room in the Brent House for a Student Scholars Meet & Greet. In March, the team worked around the clock to carefully select 16 student scholars to participate in the federally funded, 6-week summer program. On Tuesday night, the students were able to mingle with one another and the STAR administrators for the first time. The 36 attendees were treated to beverages and hors d’oeuvres during introductions from STAR staff members and a brief volunteer overview. Then, the students learned everything they needed to know about their duties as an Ochsner STAR student scholars.  | | Professor David Wilkinson, Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Queensland, updated students about the status of the accreditation of the UQ-Ochsner Clinical School with the Australian Medical Council (AMC). The documentation process has almost been completed, and the mock-accreditation team is pleased with the progress of the effort. In the next steps, Wilkinson will meet with the AMC review team in late April, the mock accreditation visits will occur in New Orleans in June and Queensland in July, and real AMC visits to New Orleans and Queensland in August and September, respectively.  | | The Ochsner Medical Library and Archives has received the Library Technology Award for 2009. The funding is for $20,000 and is awarded annually by the National Library of Medicine to assist member libraries that are interested in implementing large-scale technology applications to further library improvement and expand library services. With this award, the Ochsner Medical Library and Archives will be digitizing a primary collection of historical items such as photographs and documents. This project will provide better search capabilities as well as the preservation of the delicate archival materials. |

 | | The Science, Technology, Academics, and Research (STAR) Program is an educational summer camp sponsored by the Academics Division of Ochsner Health System. It provides qualified high school students with a unique opportunity to conduct cutting-edge, inquiry-based scientific experiments in the student laboratory, the iLab; acquire hands-on experience with sophisticated medical technologies; learn about the latest advancements in medicine and health care from Ochsner physicians, nurses, and administrators; develop professional and life skills; and participate in other stimulating and informative activities such as stress management exercises, cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification, and debates on current social issues impacted by science and medicine. These and other activities are designed to fulfill STAR’s mission to inspire, educate, and prepare students for the future. The 2009 STAR Program will be held June 1 - July 10, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. |
