St. Aug Seniors Explore Careers in Four Departments at OMC!

(December 17, 2010) At this time of year, high school seniors are stressed; they are focused on getting all of their college applications mailed in time and hoping for several acceptances. In preparation for the tedious application process, seniors have been soul searching to decide their dream career. Some students may be more certain of their futures than others, but for 14 “Purple Knights,” career exposure opportunities were available at Ochsner to provide some options and hopefully ease some of their career-choice-induced stress.

The 14 students were split into two groups and rotated through four departments simultaneously. Personnel from Child Life, Delivery, Pharmacy Inpatient, and Cardiology served as mentors, answering several of the students’ questions, including schooling required to practice in the field, salary, departmental expectations, and what a typical day is like. These discussion topics were so intriguing for the students that making each rotation not run over the allotted time was a challenge!

The students’ comments tell the story:

“Listening to Dr. Hamilton and the Cardiology doctor were especially helpful in rekindling my thirst to pursue a career in medicine.”

“My favorite aspect of the field trip was the demonstration in Maternity and Pediatrics.”

“This field trip makes me want to pursue a career in neurology and attend the STAR program at Ochsner!”

Samuel Alexander, a 2010 STAR alumnus, couldn’t wait to come back to Ochsner: “Returning to Ochsner was a wonderful experience for me. For a while, I had been wondering if I was going to be able to go back and experience the fun and excitement that I experienced in the STAR program this summer. This past week, I had the privilege of going back to visit Ochsner once again with some of my fellow St. Augustine High School students. My return brought back a lot of memories as I got a chance to see one of my former team leaders, Ms. Amanda Wood, Community Outreach Program Coordinator Mrs. Allison Fischtziur Sharai, and Dr. Hector Ventura again. I really look forward to making another return sometime in the near future.”

Academic Outreach thanks St. Augustine for its interest in our field trip program and greatly appreciates the participation of all staff members who served as mentors: Katharine Pitcher, Jenifer Ducoing, Dr. Monique Hamilton, Brittany Mallini, and Dr. Hector Ventura.

Academic Outreach serves the community and maintains Ochsner’s position as a national academic leader by supporting educational development, providing unique academic resources, and connecting students and teachers with innovative academic opportunities.
