(August 10, 2011) Soon after the school year begins, Academic Outreach will sponsor 6 high school seniors in 2-month internships at Ochsner.
Academic Outreach has a partnership with Patrick F. Taylor Science & Technology Academy to match 6 high school seniors with 6 Ochsner staff members who will mentor these high-achieving students as they work on their senior project for graduation. Academic Outreach is asking Ochsner employees to consider mentoring one of this year’s interns. Mentors will be matched with students based on the student’s senior project topic or field of study.
As a mentor, you will share your knowledge, experiences, and wisdom in your field and provide valuable opportunities by facilitating academic, career, and personal contacts. Mentors stimulate interns’ curiosity and build their confidence by presenting new ideas, opportunities, and challenges and encouraging growth and achievement in an open and supportive environment.
Being a mentor aligns with the “educate” component of Ochsner’s mission. By reaching out to students in our community, mentors can make a long-lasting impact by exposing their interns to the exciting career opportunities in the medical field.
Mentors must be able to dedicate a minimum of 20 hours to their interns from September through November. If you are willing to donate your time, knowledge, and experience or would like more information, please call the Academic Outreach Office at 504-842-5321 (Allison Sharai) or 504-842-3237 (Melisa Enclade) or email EducationOutreach@ochsner.org.
