St. Charles Satellite Center Students Visit Ochsner
(October 3, 2011) Students from the St. Charles Satellite Center came to Ochsner on September 28 to learn the specifics about four medical fields. The students’ visit was hosted by Academic Outreach.
Guided by ambassadors, the 32 students rotated in small groups through Nursing, Radiology, Child Life, and Flight Care. At each rotation, mentors who work in that field discussed how students can begin now to prepare for careers in each area, as well as the required college classes. The students had the opportunity to ask the mentors questions about their fields to gain a richer understanding of the educational preparation required and the actual work involved in each career.
This hands-on approach to career exploration is a perfect fit with the mission of the St. Charles Satellite Center. The center focuses on career paths that are projected to expand the most over the next decade. Located between Hahnville High and Destrehan High, the Satellite Center offers either morning or afternoon sessions to qualifying students. While attending the Satellite Center, team members learn how to use tools vital to workplace productivity. They have access to state-of-the-art labs and equipment. Students experience a multitasking, technology-driven world, like the one in which they will live and work.
