(October 31, 2011) Sixteen students from Hahnville High School came to Ochsner on October 27 to shadow experts in the students’ fields of interest. Each student was paired with an Ochsner employee to experience an inside look at the career and discuss such topics as the education required and what students should be doing now to prepare.
One female student, who was unsure if being a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) was a field she should pursue, stated, "My mentor helped me out a lot. She showed me what it was like to be a NICU nurse. She gave me a better understanding of what this job is like and I feel very encouraged to go into this career."
Another student noted, "I loved the action behind the scenes of taking care of the patients and hearing their stories." This encouraged her that a medical career will be something she would pursue in the future.
Hahnville High School is a comprehensive rural public secondary school in west St. Charles Parish. Hahnville provides students with a variety of experiences in its course offerings and extracurricular activities.
