(January 18, 2012) Do you know a high school student who is interested in pursuing a career in healthcare? Point that student in the right direction with the 2012 STAR Summer Program! Academic Outreach has opened applications for the 7th annual Science-Technology-Academics-Research program to inspire the future of medicine generation. This FREE summer program is a unique experience offered to 16 students throughout Louisiana.
Students who are interested in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity should get started now with their application paperwork. Students who qualify for consideration must be 16 years old by June 1, 2012 and cannot turn 18 before August 1, 2012. Paperwork includes the application, two recommendation letters, and an essay detailing the student’s desire to be a 2012 STAR Student Scholar. The application deadline is March 12, 2012, at 4:00 p.m. After committee review, the top 25% of applicants will be called for interviews with the STAR administrative team. Following this competitive process, 16 students will be selected, along with four alternates, to make up the STAR Class of 2012. Application packets are available in high school counseling offices or you can print them from the STAR website.
Students, parents, school administrators, teachers, and community members are encouraged to attend the STAR Informational session on Tuesday, February 28, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Brent House Conference Center at Ochsner’s main campus on Jefferson Highway.
From June 11 through July 18, STAR students will experience one-on-one job shadows with the departments of their choice; tour numerous departments; spend a day at Elmwood Fitness Center; observe presentations from physicians, physicians’ assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses; work with the DaVinci robot; conduct experiments with researchers in the iLab; witness a surgery via web camera; get CPR certified; take medical terminology courses; enjoy lunch with University of Queensland medical students; and so much more! Doesn’t this sound incredible?
