(March 7, 2012) On Saturday, March 3, Academic Outreach hosted the third annual Brownies Science in Action Day at Ochsner - Kenner. A total of 49 Brownies from Troop #40782 in Harahan, Troop #40040 in Marrero, Troop #24 in Destrehan, Troop #20068 in Laplace, Troop #40260 in New Orleans, Troop #40596 in New Orleans, and Troop #2116 in Metairie earned their Science in Action Try-It Badge by completing four experiments and logging information from each experiment into their activity booklets:
Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Garden – Each Brownie received a thyme, chives, or parsley seed and a planting container. After their herbs start growing, the Brownies will discover which herb they planted!
Taste Bud Discovery – The Brownies discovered where the 4 different taste areas are on their tongues by tasting a lemon, a blow pop, a potato chip, and a piece of dark chocolate.
Spinning Personality Disk –The Brownies learned the difference between primary pigment colors and secondary pigment colors. Using primary pigment colors, the brownies made a color disk. By spinning the disk like a top, the Brownies discovered that when you spin the disk quickly, your brain cannot separate the colors and perceives the color black.
St. Patrick’s Lava Lamp – The Brownies learned the difference between high density and low density by mixing water, vegetable oil, and food coloring in a plastic bottle and placing an Alka-Seltzer tablet in the bottle to watch the oil mix with the water.
After the Brownies finished all four experiments they received their Science in Action Try-It badges and a goodie bag containing an Ochsner crossword puzzle, hand sanitizer, Nutri-Grain bar, an Ochsner pencil, and a brightly colored fashion ring.
Academic Outreach thanks all of the Ochsner employees who volunteered to help make this event a huge success, including Nancy St. Germain, Erin Wilson, Brenda Fagler, Sarvia Garrido, Socea May, Tyler Lott, Judith Gardner, Ruth Hart, Wendy Morrison, Kent Boyer, Kerry Lamare, Terri Hartung, Kris Huber, and Ethel Madden.
