Resident Writing Awards Competition Deadline Is March 30

(March 12, 2012) The deadline for submitting manuscripts to the Publishing Services office or to the GME office for the annual Resident Writing Awards competition is Friday, March 30.

The Ochsner Clinic Foundation gives annual awards for excellence in medical writing by residents and fellows. The awards are presented at the house staff graduation ceremony each summer. Papers in manuscript form written between April 1 and the following March 30 are eligible for competition in three categories:

Edward D. Frohlich, MD Research Award ($1,000)
Only papers approved by Dr. Richard Re that report original, prospective, scientific investigations are eligible for entry in this category. Results must be included in the paper, so the work must have been completed.

Dean H. Echols Award for Clinical Writing ($500)
Papers (usually 20 manuscript pages or less) on any general clinical subject that could be published in a medical journal are eligible for entry in this category. The data may be acquired by retrospective review of charts, analysis of laboratory or x-ray studies, or similar analysis of completed work.

Case Report Award ($200)
Reports of single cases or small groups of cases in the form acceptable to most medical journals (a short introductory paragraph, a brief report of the case, and a short comment) are eligible for entry in this category. The suggested length is 12 pages, including references.
