(March 22, 2012) On Friday, March 16, Ochsner Academic Outreach held the Annual Power Ties event Ochsner Medical Center – New Orleans. With partners New Orleans Outreach, the Junior League of New Orleans, and Samuel Green Charter School, Academic Outreach provided opportunities for 8th graders to expand their knowledge of the professional world, career-fair style.
Thirteen students from Samuel Green Charter in New Orleans participated in job shadows with several professionals from many departments within OMC-NO. These students—Rodericka Birden, Sahndrel Dolliole, Monice Franklin, Sakira Ruffin, Taylor Washington, Darius Gray, Kia Honore , Danisha Morgan, Quiana Delmore, Nailah Ferguson-Allen, Pierre Reine, Sidney Singelton, Devin Washington—were eager to learn.
Although each student had a different career goal in mind, all the students were interested in the many career options available at Ochsner. Students were divided into small groups and completed a 90-minute job shadow with Ochsner staff members. In addition, students were introduced to 25 medical terminology words, quizzed at the end of the day, and scored 100% across the board! Volunteers from Knowledge Management, OB/GYN, Patient Access, and Sports Medicine discussed their jobs and gave the students a first-hand look at the professional world.
After the small group job shadows, Academic Outreach hosted a “business lunch” where the students and special guests enjoyed a healthy meal and shared their experiences from the job shadows.
Academic Outreach thanks all of the Ochsner staff members who played a substantial role in making this event a success, including Dr. Monique Hamilton, Dr. Lauren Vazquez, Dr. Chasity Coleman, Dr. T. Cooper-Woods, Mallory Lindsly, Mona Chawla, Graylin Jacobs, Dee McCloskey, and Anna Combes.
