Richard Deichmann, Jr., MD, Associate Medical Director of Adult Primary Care, has been invited to deliver a lecture entitled “Disaster Preparedness: Lessons from Katrina” as part of The University of Queensland (UQ) School of Medicine’s Head of School Lecture Series on Wednesday, September 16, in Australia.
Dr. Deichmann was the Chief of Medicine at Memorial Medical Center when Hurricane Katrina hit. In his lecture, he will recount the ordeal of more than 2,000 patients, physicians, nurses, hospital staff, their families, and other evacuees faced as they awaited assistance and evacuation. Dr. Diechmann published a book about his experiences, entitled Code Blue: A Katrina Physician’s Memoir.
Dr. Deichmann is a staff member of UQ’s Ochsner Clinical School and from 2010 will be coordinating the clinical teaching of UQ’s third-year medical students undertaking their General Practice rotation.
Dr. Deichmann is past-president of the Greater New Orleans Academy of Internal Medicine and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Tulane. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Certified Physician Investigator. He has conducted dozens of clinical trials in the areas of diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.
