This decision came from the ACCME board at their meeting in July and is based on the review of the department’s self-study report, evidence of performance in practice, and an interview. Pankey, Director of the Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory, will be presenting a poster at the 50th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. The presentation is titled “In Vitro Synergistic Activity of Polymyxin B (PB) and Meropenem (MER) against PB and MER-Non-Susceptible Klebsiella pneumoniae Carbapenemase (KPC)-Producing K. pneumoniae.” The meeting will be held on September 12-15, 2010, in Boston. The same study has also been selected for presentation at the 48th Annual Meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, October 21-24, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This marked Learning, Etc.’s first visit to the Ochsner’s iLab facility, and it was quite the learning experience for the 12 students. Students were aided in the experiment, directed by Dr. Jawed Alam, by 2 adults accompanying them and 2 Outreach staff members. After conducting the experiment, the students played a trivia game to learn more about DNA detection in everyday life. In March, the team worked around the clock to carefully select 16 student scholars to participate in the federally funded, 6-week summer program. On Tuesday night, the students were able to mingle with one another and the STAR administrators for the first time. The 36 attendees were treated to beverages and hors d’oeuvres during introductions from STAR staff members and a brief volunteer overview.
