Coghill Elementary School Visits the iLab
October 21,2009
Coghill Elementary School of the Recovery School District in New Orleans, took part in the COX Charities-funded iLab Bubble Gum Mystery Experiment on October 14 and October 21. Two of the school's 8th grade science classes visited Ochsner for 2-1/2 hours each. The students had an amazing experience testing DNA samples in the iLab. For some students, this was their first experience ever working with high-tech laboratory equipment. The Academic Outreach staff thoroughly enjoyed working with these students and hope to work with them again soon!

Hahnville High School students visit Ochsner Medical Center-New Orleans
October 2009
On September 23, 18 juniors and seniors from Hahnville High School came to OMC-NO for a Job Shadow Day. The students were divided in to 4 groups of 3 to 5 students each. Each group spent 1 hour in the department of their choice, which had decided before the visit. Group 1 visited the In-Patient Pediatrics Unit and Child Life. Group 2 visited the Physical and Occupational Therapy Hospital Department. Group 3 visited the Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby Units. Group 4 visited the Radiology and Ultrasound Departments. When asked about their experience, the students raved about the "welcoming and friendly staff." Some other written comments by the students and chaperones included:
"I enjoyed every part of my job shadow."
"I was very impressed and would like to come again."
"I know now that I definitely want to go to college so that I can pursue this career."
"I loved the energy and excitement the workers had for their department."
"Ochsner is a beautiful place, and I can't wait to come back."

Academic Outreach Donates Science Lab Materials to Haynes Academy!
September 2009
Due to a growing need for science laboratory materials, science teachers from Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies (Jefferson Parish Public School) reached out to Ochsner Academic Outreach to request any supplies that ACO would be able to donate. The Outreach Scientific Director, Dr. Jawed Alam, scoured the iLab and found the following items, which were donated to the Haynes Academy Science Department on September 8, 2009: glassware, plasticware, test tube/pipette racks, magnetic stirrers, vortexers, a UV crosslinker, a power supply, a microfuge, and glass bottles.
We hope that Haynes students will be able to benefit immensely from these laboratory supplies for years to come and foster a love for science.
