Exercise science is the scientific study of human movement performed to maintain or improve physical fitness. This field of study examines the effects of exercise and physical activity on people in order to optimize their physical and mental health.

Exercise science encompasses a variety of physical disciplines such as biomechanics, exercise physiology, sports psychology, and sports nutrition, along with motor control and development, cardiac rehabilitation, athletic training, and fitness for special population groups. Exercise science professionals are skilled in evaluating health behaviors and risk factors, conducting fitness assessments, and writing appropriate exercise prescriptions while motivating individuals to modify negative health and exercise habits and to achieve a positive lifestyle behavior and fitness level.
